Architect praises the team that brought SCCTC to life Inside the building, he is proud of the way the team created the circulation space where people will walk between levels. Because many of the career paths are geared toward the construction trade, such as welding, Black said the team wanted to make the building a learning tool. They chose to celebrate features like the catwalks, ramps and stairs instead of hiding them away like many buildings do. The building features exposed structures, conduits and other parts of the process students can use as a visual to understand the building process. Black said students get to see how the building goes together. He hopes that makes them excited about the trades they are training to go into. Black said the most satisfying thing about this project was the great team he got to work with. Since the start of classes, Black said members of his team have been on-site to address any issues that might be discovered. He enjoys seeing the students walking between classes. He hopes classes at SCCTC are a start of something great for each one of them and he hopes the campus gets them excited about their careers. Black believes Saline County is in the right place and at the right time for explosive growth and has leaders in both the city and county who are encouraging that growth. "Saline County is really about to catch fire," he said, adding the sky is the limit for both the county and the students. NOTABLE FACTS SITE + BUILDING By Elisha Morrison, The Saline Courier The project architect for the recently opened Saline County Career Technical Campus was amazed by how well all the stakeholders, along with the various contractors, worked together to make the dream of the center a reality. "Everybody was just really wonderful to work with," said Brian Black, president of Black Corley Owens & Hughes. He would love to be able to work with the same group in the future if SCCTC ever expands. As a Saline County company, Black said Black Corley Owens & Hughes was excited to be chosen to work on the project. He said for the first time in his 24 years with the company, the staff opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate getting a job. "It was a big honor," Black said. As someone who was Saline County born and raised, Black was especially thrilled to be chosen for the project. Black said one of the great things about the project is the common goals all those involved shared. He explained a job like this with so many stakeholders-Saline County Judge Jeff Arey, Saline County Economic Development Corporation, ASU Three Rivers, the six school districts, the SCCTC committee can often be difficult. He was pleased to find they all shared a common vision for SCCTC. After a few meetings he was able to get the group's wants and needs. He said they did not let ego or politics stand in the way. He said that is rare for a $40 million project. "I have never worked with such a large group that got along," Black said, calling them a dream team. Along with the clients, Black worked with a design team. His partner Michael Hughes managed production of drawings for the job. He praised the engineers - Garnat Engineering, Livers Calhoun Engineers, Live Oak Engineering and Anderson Engineering. The interior design was completed by Affinity Design, including Leslie Black. The final part of the team was CDI Construction. Black said it was a great team to work with. One of the biggest challenges of the project was the site where the facility sits. Black said it has a 25-foot slope where the 134,000-square-foot building sits. The design team solved the issue by creating a stepped down structure. Black said the building follows the form of the hill. "We tried to make a feature out of those level changes," Black said. 8 - 27 Acres Total - 22 Acres Developed - 5 Acres Future Expansion - 988 Parking Spaces (current) - 1 Mile Walking Trail - Miles of Sidewalks 134,159 SF Building - 4 Floor Levels - 18 Classroom / Lab Suites - 8 Gen.
